COP Tutorial 1

For my COP tutorial I took with my research question, and a plan with chapters of my dissertation.

My question is 'what effects has the digital era had on publication today?' I think now following my tutorial I am going to change the word 'effects' to 'impact' as I feel it is more relevant and makes more sense.

What impact has the digital era had on publication today?

For my dissertation I would like to interview people in the creative industry that work within print/ publication to get their opinions on how it is changing.

I got some names of some people I could potentially interview and get useful answers. These people include:

- Alec Dawson from interview mag
- Andy Grey from colours may vary
- Ditto Press
- DR. ME
- People of print

I now need to think of some questions to send to these people to get a decent response, one thing that was suggested is that I should send them my actual title of my dissertation and then add some sub headings maybe for some more specific areas.

In the discussion one thing that was spoke about was education in the digital era, nowadays how uni's and schools have online portals to send all information across such as tasks and reading but online. Also how in some uni's a lot of the time they are just emailing their tutor and not actually seeing anyone in person thanks to the digital era, discussing whether this is a positive or a negative. I think this is something I could mention and make further research into for my dissertation.

For my next tutorial

• updated version of proposal form
• narrowed down plan
• interview questions and sent off for primary research
• more thought into practical
• further research and reading

500 intro
1800x4 chapters
900 conclusion

With the high impact of the Internet and new media, what is publication today?

What impact is the internet and new media having on publication today?

What effects has the digital era had on publication today?

INTRO

The dissertation investigates the impact of the internet and new media on graphic design publication, focusing mainly on magazines and briefly on newspapers. It also attempts to project into the future demands of graphic design. A historical and contemporary approach will be taken, and reference will be made to the theories of….. and…….
Chapter one looks at
Chapter two addresses
Chapter three investigates
Chapter four explores

CHAPTER ONE

Looks historically at print and also at the changes which have occurred, due to the introduction of the Internet and new media.

• How publication has changed the way we communicate
• Publishing before the Internet (Gutenberg press)
• The inventions that have made it easier (camera ect.)
• When the internet stared
• How the Internet has changed our lives

Advantages and disadvantages of new media (how it is changing publication)

CHAPTER TWO

FOR THE INTERNET Advantages of Internet on publication.
• Large worldwide audience
• Large platform to share- publishing on social media
• Exciting new possibilities for new media and the internet
• Portable (iPads, kindles, phones)
• Quick information- news updates
• Interactive- more responsive web and app design
• The internet bring people together, meet new people, people seeing your designs
• Networking
• Not really a need for flyers/ business cards, because everyone interacts with social media publishing to such a large audience instantly and for free

CHAPTER THREE

FOR PRINT PUBLICATION Disadvantages of Internet on publication.
• Print is for every generation
• Looks better
• Is permanent
• Collections
• People becoming obsessed with social media
• Stepping away from the screen, wasting time online
• Worth more
• Something has actually got to be good for it to be printed, things don’t have to be good to be published online, there just there
• Personal
• Better user experience- sensory

CHAPTER FOUR

Slow movement advantages and disadvantages (might need it, but how practical is it, now the internet is in existence)

• The western worlds emphasis on speed and technology
• Road runner culture, nobody is willing to slow down people becoming more impatient
• Living the fast life instead of the good life
• People should unplug from their screens
• New media and the internet speeding our lives up
• Taking time out from a busy lifestyle to realise what is important
• The relationship between technology and time, time is money, you eighter use it or lose it
• Good slow- eating a meal with your family with the TV turned off
• China, Thailand, Brazil all embarrassed the slow movement

CONCLUSION

• Different experience
• Print will still be needed in the future
New media and the Internet are very powerful however there will always be a need for quality publications.

CASE STUDY

Detailed critical case study of one publication that responds innovatively to new media and methods of distribution. Eighter look at:
• Computer arts – pushing digital through constantly advertising it in their magazines
• Printed pages / It’s nice that

PRIMARY RESEARCH

Interview – someone from computer arts, someone from made you look
Survey at a specific age range

SECONDARY RESEARCH

Ted Talks
Journals
Books
Internet
Videos

Made you look- A film about creativity in the digital age, how the digital age is changing creative for better or for worse

• Good interviews with creative such as Kate Moross, Anthony Burrill and Hattie Stewart revealing their opinions of the creative industry and the Internet
Made You Look is a documentary about the UK DIY graphic arts scene of the 21st century. Via candid interviews with top British creative, publishers and agency owners we explore the fact that more people than ever seem to be turning to analogue means of creating things, even though we are living at the height of the digital era.

INVESTIGATE & INTEROGATING

Interrogating the effect of the Internet on publication (necessity of speed today, effects on speed today)

Triangulate- Comparing different points of view to interrogate a subject.

Each paragraph has an introduction and a conclusion
Implications of this on the graphic designer (different skillset, people learning new skills)

I went to see the Made you look film at Hype Park picture house and it was very relevant to my dissertation and my practice.

The film was filled with interviews from creatives about creativity in the digital age, a very relevant subject.

Made You Look is a documentary about the UK DIY graphic arts scene of the 21st century. Via candid interviews with top British creative, publishers and agency owners we explore the fact that more people than ever seem to be turning to analogue means of creating things, even though we are living at the height of the digital era.

I really enjoyed the film here are some notes I took from it that may be useful for my dissertation on publication in the digital era.

• how the media and twitter has made it easier for people to share their work
• the internet can be quite comforting
• without the internet you wouldn't be able to engage with that many people
• liking and sharing is a good way of communication
• the internet can be pure procrastination
• through seeing many other peoples work the internet can be a source of self doubt
• can be a relief not to have the internet at times
• creatives would struggle to get their work seen without the internet
• creatives would work differently without the internet
• ideas are shared so quickly
• copy write
• how do we tell stories/ voice our opinions without the internet?
• the world would be in chaos without the internet
• would love to see the world without the internet
• the internet is open floodgates for creativity
• now the younger generation is constantly on the internet so our new media is screen printing
• the internet is infinite with a 'look at this, look at this!' attitude
• get away from the computer for your own health and mental health

These are just notes I took from what the creatives say, the film took two and a half years to produce. I will defiantly be watching it again and be referencing it in my dissertation.
