Visual Response Ideas After Presentation

People liked the idea of 'sex sells' the best. As they think it wont just be a collection of research, I can actually do something with it. The ideas that came from this was that I could take the American Apparel brand and look into how well they actually brand it, and how they do it quite sexually and how well they do it, I could explore this by changing the typeface/ images to show how well they do it.

Here is just a quick example of how American Apparel uses the typeface helvetica so well. I just quickly changed the typeface to copper black and it has completely changed the advert. I find this interesting how well branded they are, yet so controversial.

Here I have rebranded the image as a Primark advert, this is quite funny because Primark would never advertise like this however this is the theme of American Apparel and it suits them as a brand. I think this is an interesting thing to work on.

I could either do 1 of 2 things being

1) Just aim it at American Apparel and brand it just for them, explore the way they advertise and why they get there adds banned to gain more publicity

2) Look into a variety of controversial/ banned adds- there are may brands that do this, I could make a publication on controversial ads and why

Marc Jacobs

Here is a Marc Jacobs advert that caused a lot of controversiality, mainly because the model is under 18 and where the bottle of perfume is placed.

Jack Wills

This is a Jack Wills advert that has caused a lot of controversy as they advertised skinny dipping, when an advert is so controversial it also gets many opinions from the public, this could be interesting to put these opinions in my publication.

United colours of Beniton

'What’s colorful, mass-produced, and fun? It was only a matter of time before Benetton saw the link between their line of clothing and condoms. Influenced by the Olympics in Barcelona the preceding year, the 1993 ads brought color to the AIDS pandemic. This was just over a decade after the formal recognition of the disease, when it was still charged with ideas that it was cleansing society of the undesirables. Benetton bravely uses HIV positivity to create lively, sexy images — a perspective very unlike traditional representations of AIDS as death itself. As we will shortly see, they will play on this trope more controversially.'

Tom Ford

This childishly provocative Tom Ford eyewear ad from 2008 was banned in Italy.

With this idea there is a lot I can research into however I need to keep it consistant, I think it would be best to keep it to fashion and beauty theme and the brands as there is a lot I can look into with this.

Brief 4- Speaking from Experience- Breif

I have decided to go with my idea of organisation/ time management, as I think this is something that effects every course and is a massive shock to some people. Here is the brief that I have written I have left it quite open so people can interpret it in their own way.

Brief

Joining a degree course you have to be able to manage your own time, this at first can be difficult for most students. Create a piece of graphic design that you think would help you manage your time more effectively.

The media or format you choose to create this is up to you, but it must be something physical that can be turned into a PDF for students to be able to print from home.

Background and Considerations

Research thoroughly and explore a range of concepts. Consider your target audience, are you going to be course specific or general?

Not all your investigations should be digital, experiment with sketches and ideas first.

Deliverables

A series of design sheets showing your progress

  • Research
  • Initial designs
  • Design Choices (colour, format, type, layout)
All of your design decisions should be documented on your blog

Mandatory Requirements

A physical solution
A printable PDF version

Breif 4- Speaking from Experience Ideas and Research

Here is a mind map of ideas so far for this brief, there is a lot that I can look into because moving to uni was such a huge step. Some of the things are more course specific than others like blogging and crits, they were two things that I struggled with at the start, organising my time to blog and crits as I was very nervous speaking in front of people. Other things such as food shopping and finding way around are more general and can be related to all students.

Idea 1-
Organisation
My first idea is to make a fold out calendar of the year that is specific to the graphic design student with things such as the anatomy of type, when deadlines are, and reminders for them to keep blogging. I think it would look better as a banner that went round the room rather than a standard poster. I would do this as I found that organisation and time management is a massive thing since moving to uni.

Here is a festival guide made by Nobrow that I found I really like this and personally I would stick it on my wall, I like how there is a cover round it. I could design it so you fold it out and can stick it on your wall or you could have it as a book as well.

Idea 2-
Shopping
I found it difficult when starting university knowing where to get food from and where is cheapest. I could make a chart on the basics where to find them cheapest and how much, I could also make info graphics and pie charts. This could also include the quickest ways to get to the shops and the opening times.

Idea 3-
Hangover Cures
When being a fresher you tend you drink a lot, I think a book on helpful tips on how to cure a hangover would be useful. This would be a pocket sized book including recipes of food and drink that could help you when you are feeling hungover and how to wake yourself up to be productive the next day.

Here is a screen shot from a BBC website including many recipes to help cure a hangover.

Breif 4- Speaking from Experience- Group task

As a starter task for this new brief 'speaking from experience' in pairs we listed things that we didn't previously know.

Then we pasted the sheets round the table and ticked the ones that we didn't previously didn't have, we then had to turn these into problems. This was a lot more difficult than expected as it was difficult to word. We came up with, the problem being 'can't cook' as 'moving away from home/family there is a struggle to eat healthy food.' This was then out problem that we can make our brief on.

We got given a blank brief we added our brief in and past it to another group to see if they would come up with what we wanted, and they did. I now need to do this process on my own, I need to carefully plan it.

Studio Brief 2- Theory into Practice- Visual Response Research and Ideas

What is a publication?
How is it made?
What format could it be?
How is the format relevant with the content?
Is this important?
What are the conventions of publication? How do you work with these?
What are the rules?
Do you have to obey them?

What is a publication?

The preparation and issuing of a book, journal, or piece of music for public sale.

Essay

My essay focused on advertising and the use of persuasion within advertising. Here are a few adverts that I focused on.

Propaganda and war poster

Positive cigarettes adverts

Celebrity status within advertising

Quick mind map of ideas

Celebrity endorsement, I could focus my publication on celebrity endorsement and how a brand use a celebrity to promote a product, I could make this in a magazine/ zine format. In my essay I wrote about how it promotes the celebrity as well as the brand/product. I could look into a lot of adverts including Beyonce and her super bowl adverts lady gaga and how she promotes beat headphones in music videos ect, I could also look into why do people even care about celebrities?

1950's Women's Cigarette advertising, I feel this could be an interesting subject to look into. I could look into how women were the first people to smoke in the 50's and how it was fashionable.

I looked into a brand called death cigarettes in my essay a brand that didn't last long because they were hitting consumers with the truth, at first people thought it was a joke and brought a packet, but the novelty soon wore off. The packets are now a collectable item.

I could look into how advertising cigarettes over the years has changed

To put the cigarette adverts into a publication I think I would do it the size of a cigarette packet and have it expanding, like it is expending through the years showing the change, I would use type and text within the publication.

One of my favourite brands that advertise are american apparel,  I went online and looked at their advertising archive, I found this very interesting seeing how the brand changed through out the years.

I would make a publication on how sex sells, this could end up being too explicit though, however a lot of brands do this including brands like Dolce and Gabbana and Tom Ford, there would be plenty to look into.

I looked a lot into Chanel and the ridiculous amount of money that they spend on advertising by using celebrities and the way they film things. What I find particularly interesting is the way the brand has changed, I would like to do vintage channel adverts and show how the brand has such class and elegance and show how it has changed.

A Chanel advert that I spotted in trinity

Some leaflets I picked up from a Chanel makeup counter to see what they already offer.

To make a publication for Chanel I would put all of the adverts along with information into a point of sale that can also be transfered into a booklet when folded back up, the publication would be made to look quite vintage as I would put it in black and white.

Brief 3- Screen Print (Poster) Research

Olly Moss

Here is a couple of Olly Moss' movie posters that focus on silhouettes of the characters and using bold colours. What I like about these posters is that even if you took away the type I think people would still get what film it is about.

This is another movie poster by Olly Moss I really like the use of the colour purple, and how simple the imagery is, it works well, also the type is kept with the Alice theme.

Metropolis Poster

Heinz Schulz-Neudamm

The worlds most valuable movie poster, the Metropolis, personally I don't like it at all but it does make me want to watch the film to see what its about.

Pixar Minimal Movie Posters

What I love about these is that by the use of one simple colour and a vector image you immediately know what the film is.

Saul Bass

This is a classic example of one of Saul Bass' posters, a two coloured screen print, my favourite part of this poster is the typography, again the imagery is so simple.

The use of half tone dots in the type makes this poster really unique, the yellow grabs your attention and the black stands out best on this.

Alternative Movie Posters

Here are some posters that I like from the alternative movie poster website, the simpleness and the flat imagery makes them stand out, my favourite is the Wizard of Oz one as it looks like it has been done with charcoal by hand, also the wolf of wall street relates to the film very.
