Comparing Graphics and Fine Art

Today in class we had a discussion about the differences between Fine art and Graphics and which we think is better (obviously we all thought graphics) it was good to hear other peoples opinions on the subject as they are quite closely related.

Fine art

  • more personal subject
  • a specialist subject
  • more free/ less resricive
  • more emotion
  • impact
  • smaller audience
  • produced for the rich
  • pure
Graphic Design
  • design has more rules
  • more of a purpose
  • larger audience
  • see it everywhere
  • see it everyday
  • visual communication

I didn't realise that Damien Hirst actually went to Leeds college of Art to do a foundation and then moved to London. I found this interesting as I have seen alot of his work in various art galleries, personally I like his work but it is very controversial, but I think that is a good thing as it gets the people going and talking which is what fine artists want to get themselves known. I feel as if Graphic Designers are very restricted with their work where as Fine Artists can pretty much do what they want and class it as 'art', however sometimes this can be a bad thing as some artists take it too far. Graphic Design is everywhere whereas Fine Art you only tend to see in galleries in a very select audience.
